Painting mistakes, oil based paint over latex or latex over oil based?

I’m sure that if you have ever expierenced paint peeling off trim or walls and seeing paint under it that wont come off, then you know somethings wrong.

It’s a nightmare. you have to remove all the paint that’s peeling and repaint it. Whats the cause?

The cause of one paint peeling from another is because the paint under the paint peeling is Oil based paint. You see, you can paint oil based paint over latex, but you can’t paint latex over oil based paint.

I dont know all the reasons why. All i know is you must find out if the trim you are painting over is oil or latex. You can find out what the paint is by getting some Acetone or nail polish remover and rubbing it over the trim with a rag and if it comes off on the rag, its oil, if not then its latex.

There’s no standard in what painters use on trim. some use oil, some use latex. I like oil because it last much longer and the shine stays longer. oil based paint is messy to use and you have to clean your brushes much more but the quality is much better.

When painting walls and ceilings however, i use latex paint, either eggshell or flat paint.

You can paint latex paint over oil based IF, and i mean IF you prime the trim first with something like “Zinsser Cover Stain Sealer” or a product called “KILZ”, but beaware that kilz is very strong smelling compared to zinsser coverstain sealer. I always use some kind of scotch brite pad to scuff the trim up and then prime it with Zinsser Cover stain” or “KILZ”. this is the only way i paint latex over oil based.

Home Depot has some of the best Oil Based trim paint I’ve ever used. It is also half the cost of my regular paint store. I use Benjamin Moore wall and ceiling paints from my regular paint store because they are very consistent in mixing the colors perfect when i have to paint spots on walls or ceilings that have to match perfect. But for my trim paint that’s oil based i use the Glidden brand oil trim paint at home depot.

If you do run across peeling paint from trim and you can eaisly scratch it off with your finger nail, then you must remove all of it from the trim or when you paint over it, it will look terrible and also start peeling off quickly by its self.

You can purchase Zinsser cover stain at home deopt or lowes and most paint stores for around $18 per gallon, i hope this helps. shannon cook   the Drywall Doc
